Named for its layered, tiered shape, Wedding Cake Island isn’t just a geological curiosity. It’s a natural guardian, shielding the bay from heavy swell and shaping the calm waters that make Coogee ideal for ocean swimming. Twice a year, swimmers get the rare chance to go beyond the bay — to circumnavigate the island itself in the Coogee Island Challenge.
Run by Coogee Surf Life Saving Club and a passionate team of volunteers, the Challenge’s marquee event is the 2.4km swim around Wedding Cake Island — a course that’s as scenic as it is exhilarating. For many, it’s a rite of passage. For others, a pilgrimage.
What makes the swim so special isn’t just the distance or the views above water — it’s also what lies beneath. When swimming at Coogee, you can see blue gropers, stingrays, turtles and even dolphins from time to time. The reef’s ledges and kelp beds host a rich marine ecosystem, offering a rare glimpse into Sydney’s underwater world.
The island gained national attention through the instrumental track “Wedding Cake Island” by Midnight Oil, released in 1980. The song has since become a surf rock anthem, covered by bands like The Atlantics and performed by The Break, which includes members of Midnight Oil.
The Autumn edition of the Coogee Island Challenge in April 2025 was the biggest yet, with over 2,000 swimmers. A remarkable 67% were first-time entrants. Ages ranged from 10 to 99, with the largest groups in the 30–39 and 50–59 brackets. Over 85% of swimmers came from outside Coogee — many from interstate and overseas.
And it’s not just about the swim. By participating, you become part of a larger community of like-minded individuals. It’s about the bonds you form, the stories you share, and the collective memories you create.
Now, attention turns to the Spring edition on Sunday 30 November 2025. Within the first week of registrations opening, over 250 swimmers had already signed up. Momentum is building, not just for this event, but for ocean swimming as a whole.
