Youth Development

The LaPa Gold Junior Iron Classic is Coogee Minnows's junior version of The Coolangatta Gold, the most premier endurance race in Australian Surf Sports. LaPa Gold offers junior lifesavers a fun, challenging event to test themselves. It also offers youth development and a pathway for our next generation of volunteer surf lifesavers for their teenage years and beyond.

LaPa Gold Junior Iron Classic has 3 courses each involving run, swim and board. These have been specifically designed to allow competition-proficient Nippers and Cadets from U9-U17 of all levels and abilities to enjoy this challenging event.

Coogee is one of the largest Nippers clubs in Australia. We proudly rank in the top 5 of State and National surf sport competitions. The LaPa Gold Junior Iron Classic offers all junior lifesavers to participate in one of 3 courses at a level that matches their ability and confidence.

The Courses

LaPa Gold Junior Iron Classic offers 3 courses: the Short Course is  conducted in the relative safety of Frenchman's Bay with the more challenging Medium Course and Long Course around the iconic headland from Frenchman’s Bay to Yarra Bay.



7am open

After dropping off your board at the designated area at least 30 mins prior to the start time for your chosen course, make your way to the registration table at the start line to mark off your arrival and pick up your wrist band.

Short Course
500m Run • 150m Swim • 600m Board • 500m Run

Who is this good for?

Individual option only. The Short Course is the entry level event and is open to competition-proficient Nippers and Cadets from U9-U17. You don’t have to be a competitor or be the fastest in the water, this course is about testing yourself and is perfect for beginners looking to build their confidence. It will be held in the calm waters of Frenchman's Bay and well supported with Water Safety. The aim is for all participants to finish with a smile on their face. Open to Coogee SLSC members only.
Medium Course
300m Run • 350m Swim • 1km Run • 900m Paddle • 300m Run

Who is this good for?

Individual and Team options available. The Medium Course is perfect for those confident in swimming and boarding but who don't feel ready for the ultimate challenge of the Long Course. Medium Course participants will run around the headland to Yarra Bay and paddle back. Coogee SLSC members are able to do this course as a team. (2 -4 team members)
Long Course
500m Run • 800m Swim • 1km Run • 250m Swim • 300m Run • 1.5km Paddle • 300m Run

Who is this good for?

Individual option only. Participants must be in U11-U17. The Long Course is for all those looking to test themselves in a gruelling mini version of the iconic Coolangatta Gold. The Long Course provides a true test of your iron skills across the 4.65k course. It provides you the chance to test yourself or race against other elite competitors across this highly challenging course. Any junior lifesavers U11-17 confident in the ocean is encouraged to have a go at the Long Course. Open to any competition proficient member of any Surf Club.

Surf Club

Since 2021, Coogee Minnows has run the LaPa Gold Junior Iron Classic for junior lifesavers.

Can I register on the day?

Registrations close on the Thursday prior to the LaPa Gold.  Registrations are submitted via your Club through the SLS Sports Events Management System (SEMS). There are no registrations on the day.


Teams of up to 4 can register in the Medium Course only. The Short Course and Long Course are open to individuals only. The team option is open to Coogee SLSC members only.

BYO Boards & what else to bring

All participants are required to bring their own boards or arrange to borrow one from your Club.

The run leg for the Long and Medium Courses is a 1km on HARD surface so please bring running shoes. Competitors will leave shoes at the designated transition point so that they put them on at the end of the swim leg, there will be buckets to rinse sand off, elastic laces can be a great option for getting shoes on faster.

Other things to bring on the day are:

  • Swimmers
  • Goggles
  • Pink Rashie
  • Swim Cap
  • Towel
  • Warm Jumper (pending weather)
  • Wetsuits optional however not always easy to run in!
Board drop-off

Board drop-off is required no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of your chosen event and at the designated drop-off location.

Long Course drop-off (drop-off between 6:30am - 7:00am)

Medium Course drop-off (drop-off between 7:00am - 7:30am)

Event Support

LaPa Gold is fully staffed by qualified surf lifesavers and first aid officers, as well as extensive water safety across the course.


A photographer will be at the event to capture the fun of the day.


When the water temperature is below 16.8 degrees, wetsuits are optional. If the water temperature drops below 14.8 degrees, wetsuits are compulsory.


Prizes awarded to top male and female positions in the Long Course (Short Boards and Long Boards awards). Spot prizes are given to participants on the Medium and Short courses. Coogee also awards prizes to our Fundraisers and Coaches.

Coogee Minnows is Australia’s longest continually running Junior Surf Life Saving Club, celebrating 60 years of Nippers in 2023-24, and is a dynamic part of the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club community. Minnows offers a fun and active lifestyle choice for children between the ages of 5 and 14, as well as a solid base for learning lifesaving skills and competition in beach activities. Minnows are taught everything from sun and surf safety, beach sprints and board paddling, all the way to lifesaving skills, CPR and water rescues.

Randwick City Council
Community Partner

Randwick City is the proud home of 4 strong surf life saving clubs. Volunteer Surf Life Savers patrol Clovelly, Coogee, Maroubra and South Maroubra Beaches on weekends, school holidays and public holidays between late September and April each year. This is in addition to Council's Lifeguard services. The 4 clubs  provide a number of services including patrolling the coastline, training, competition and youth development.
